Greetings, all! We are just coming to the end of the 'peak season' for vegan-friendly festivals here in the UK - running from just before World Vegan Day (1 Nov) until Yule. I know that in England alone during this period there's been the West Midlands Vegan Festival in Wolverhampton, an Eco-Veggie Fair in London, the Animal Aid Fair in London, and today a Cruelty-Free Fair in Birmingham and the East Midlands Vegan Festival in Nottingham, with another Eco-Veggie Fair in Reading.

Are there many vegan festivals near you?

What do you feel are the benefits of festivals for the vegan movement?

Iris came to the sanctuary a couple of years ago. She and nine other rabbits lived in a small wire cage without proper food and water. They were, so far as animal control could discern, being raised for food. There were turkeys, ducks, geese, and pigeons on the property as well. We found homes for all the animals, except one turkey and three rabbits. In a tragic turn of events, one of the rabbits broke her back at the vet when a vet tech took her out of her crate. She never recovered and was euthanized. Iris' son displayed a genetic defect of splayed legs and was placed into a home with other special-needs bunnies.

Iris is one of two rabbits at the sanctuary - amazingly, really - who will tolerate us touching her. Really, she's the only rabbit due to the fact that the other rabbit lets you touch her, then bites you.

The turkey, Willow, remains with us. And gives us this look frequently:

Quick introduction: I live in Alberta, Canada, and although I've only been vegan for just over a year, and it has been the best year of food in my life so far. I read a lot of books on nutrition, cookbooks... and books in general. I'm a crazy cat lady (I have three), and I love plants and flowers -- especially taking photos of them. :)

I tried this recipe a few weeks ago and it was a gorgeous experience in colour, flavour and scent. Best of all, it made me feel like it was summer.

Grapefruit, Avocado and Fennel Salad with Orange Juice

Created by: Chef Brad Moore, Toronto, ON

Serves 4

• 1/3 cup (75 mL) 100% orange juice
• ¼ cup (50 mL) fresh lemon juice
• 3 tablespoons (45 mL) olive oil
• 2 tablespoons (30 mL) liquid sweetener of your choice (the original recipe called for honey)
• 1 tablespoon (15 mL) minced shallot
• 1 teaspoon (5 mL) grated lemon peel
• 1 teaspoon (5 mL) grated orange peel
• 1 teaspoon (5 mL) minced peeled fresh ginger
• 1 teaspoon (5 mL) dry mustard
• 1 teaspoon (5 mL) oriental sesame oil
• 2 large pink Florida grapefruits, peel and white pith removed
• 1 pound (1/2 kg) fennel bulbs, trimmed, cut into paper-thin slices
• 2 large avocados, halved, pitted, peeled, cut into thin slices
• 2 cups (500mL) arugula*

Whisk first 10 ingredients in large bowl to blend. Season with salt and pepper. Using sharp knife, cut between membranes of grapefruits to release segments. Spread fennel slices over large platter. Arrange grapefruit segments and avocado slices atop fennel. Drizzle dressing over salad. Arrange arugula atop salad.

*I had no arugula, so I used a spring greens mix, and that was perfectly delicious.

Any of you tried melting Sheese? My mom was kind enough to purchase some of the medium cheddar Sheese. I usually just use it in sammiches or on crackers or straight from the tub from whence it came...I'd really like a grilled cheese sammich or something melty, though.

If you've melted sheese w/ success, let me know the best technique. Thanks!

Welcome to veganism, a community for vegans and would-be vegans to discuss ... er ... things.

There's a rule here, which is that you have to be respectful of veganism or we will, as the vegan freak IRC channel puts it, "introduce you to the ban hamster".

Our début icon is a picture of Nemo (a human) supposedly feeding Casper (an alpaca), but getting too interested in eating his own carrot and failing to reach Casper's mouth. Poor Casper!
